Smart urban logistics: smart technology for urban deliveries
Smart urban logistics involves the use of digital technologies, real-time data and automated systems to organise the flow of goods in cities more efficiently, sustainably and reliably. It differs from traditional urban logistics through the integration of IoT sensors, route planners and digital platforms that manage deliveries in real time.
The difference compared to traditional urban logistics lies in the ability to adapt: smart systems process each delivery as input for the next and automatically adjust routes based on what happens en route.
The four technological pillars
Smart urban logistics does not rely on a single technology. It is the combination of four layers that together form a coherent system, with each pillar reinforcing the others.
1. IoT and sensor data
IoT sensors in vehicles, hubs and urban infrastructure continuously monitor load levels, traffic congestion and delivery times. This information gives drivers and planners real-time insight into what is happening on the route, enabling them to make adjustments before a problem arises.
2. Route optimisation
Smart route planning software calculates thousands of delivery routes simultaneously every day, taking into account time slots, LEZ restrictions and traffic forecasts. Route optimisation reduces the average journey distance by 15 to 25 per cent compared with manually planned routes.
3. Digital communication platforms
A Transport Management System (TMS) centralises order management, route planning and customer communication on a single platform. End customers automatically receive a text message or email with a track-and-trace link and a two-hour delivery time window. This reduces the number of customer enquiries regarding delivery status by an average of 40 per cent.
4. Electric and zero-emission vehicles
Smart urban logistics integrates electric vans and cargo bikes into delivery routes. Charging stations at urban hubs charge vehicles during the sorting phase, ensuring that the electric fleet can complete the entire urban route without needing to recharge en route.

The role of urban hubs
An urban hub, also known as a microhub or city hub, is a consolidation point on the outskirts of a city centre. Goods arrive by large lorry from a central warehouse. Without a well-positioned hub network, smart urban logistics is difficult to put into practice: the hub is the physical anchor point on which the digital organisation relies.
