Employee in the Spotlight: Geert De Camps

Employee in the Spotlight: Geert De Camps

Geert has been with VPD for over a decade, across two separate periods and three different sites. He began as a planner, returned to the same role, and now holds a position within Human Resources.

The transport sector has always fascinated me

What has your journey at VPD been like?

Geert: After working in advertising for a while, I found my way into the transport industry – a field I’ve always found fascinating. I first worked for an international coach company, where I eventually joined the planning team. With that experience under my belt, I joined VPD in 2011 as a planner/dispatcher. Later, I decided to take on a new challenge, which ultimately didn’t turn out to be the right fit. So I was glad to be able to return to VPD in the same planner role. And since January 2024, I’ve taken on a new adventure in the HR department.

A department where the door is always open

What made you switch roles?

Geert: I was ready for something new. I wanted a break from the constant deadlines in planning. This change has brought variety to my work: a mix of administrative tasks – like time tracking and payroll – and human contact. I enjoy helping colleagues and offering explanations. It’s my way of contributing to making HR a department where the door is always open.

The transition went smoothly. My colleagues supported me and I completed several training courses. We often have those, as the HR landscape is always changing – especially in the area of payroll.

From small to not-so-small business

How did you experience VPD’s rapid growth?

Geert: The company has expanded both physically and organisationally. New buildings, more colleagues... it’s becoming difficult to know everyone’s name and role. But thanks to my seniority, I still know who to turn to for what.

Despite the growth, VPD has kept its family spirit. Everyone’s flexibility made the transition go smoothly.

What I really appreciate is the wide variety of cultures and religions within the company. It brings different perspectives and has a very positive impact on decision-making. That has certainly played a role in our development.

What challenges need to be tackled?

Geert: Growth brings constant adjustments. The decision-making process evolves, which requires more coordination. There are still a few areas for improvement – details that are well known and already being worked on.

That’s perfectly normal for a company in development.

Why should new talent choose VPD?

Geert: VPD is a young and dynamic company – and has been for a long time. Its founding values are still very much present and remain important. There’s definitely a lot of flexibility, and real opportunities are offered.

Helping people – that’s what drives me

What does the future hold for you?

Geert: I can see myself staying at VPD, although you can never be 100% sure. I still have a lot to learn in the HR department, and I really want to focus on that first. But I also still feel the pull of returning to the planning department one day. Even though it was a job full of deadlines, it was the role of a lifetime for me. I miss it, and I’d have to think hard if the opportunity came up.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself?

Geert: I might come across as strict, and I often remind people that their time records need to be accurate. But there’s a good reason: I want every colleague to be paid correctly. Helping others – that’s what drives me.

I also like to broaden my horizons through travel and culture – from opera to street theatre. I recommend it to everyone: step out of your little bubble, open yourself to the world, and try to help others.
